The tech and media industries are all a chatter today with Randi Zuckerberg’s resignation from Facebook as Director of Marketing.
There are two big questions surrounding the move.
1. What will Randi do next?
2. Will Randi work with Facebook competitors?
Here’s my predictions….
What Randi will do next?
It’s suggested from Randi’s letter that her new company will probably work with ‘traditional’ media organisations. Given her background in running projects with ABC, CNN and recent Emmy award nomination for work on Facebook Live it seems likely that Randi wants to innovate within the Social TV space – she calls this parcipatory viewing.
As Facebook doesn’t seem overly focussed on video or TV/live programming right now it makes sense that Randi has felt it’s time to move outside the company to do this.
I’m also wondering if she’s going to get involved in transmedia projects which is a big trend coming out of the US. Transmedia is loosely defined as storytelling across multiple platforms and is being adopted by forward thinkers in the film and broadcast industries. You can learn more in this Wired article from their August issue cover title ’TV breaks free’.
Will Randi work with Facebook competitors?
Yes and no. It’s a tad silly to suggest that Randi is going to run off and work with Google directly. However, if she’s truly going to create cross-platform experiences she won’t be able to do that tied into one particular platform. Her clients will be media companies and all the social platforms may be considered for delivery – I wouldn’t imagine her working directly for the platforms themselves (been there, done that).
In all likelihood, with Randi’s indepth knowledge of the platform, Facebook is likely to benefit from any innovative projects she involves them with in future. She just can’t recommend them as the exclusive social platform.
Randi’s long been known as a rising star in tech and media. I’m excited. Watch this space!
