Over to Rod Burns who has crafted some updates, in his own inimitable style, of events we’re involved with this month. – Darika

Social Media Marketing: Thursday 17th June

Not wishing to misuse our innate skills in the psychology of persuasion, we would like to encourage you via some viral coercion to take a trip to the Social Media Marketing 2010 Conference on 17th June. There will be a veritable smorgasbord of social media experts and enough viral marketing gurus to maximize your niche to infinity and beyond. The fun doesn’t stop here though; if that isn’t enough to get you salivating with joy, Tempero’s illustrious captain Dominic Sparkes will also be present to rhapsodise further about our recent paper on UGC and the Law, which had a fantastic reception when it was launched back in February. This is a great opportunity to rub shoulders with some highly experienced social media professionals, learn something engaging and refresh your networks.

Follow the hashtag #SMMUK10

http://socialmediamarketing.co.uk/

Cleaning up Communications: Friday 25th June

Do you suffer from filthy communications? Is your interactive reputation sullied by the mucky paws of tired and derogatory media labels? If so, we may have found the answer…

If you’re free on Friday 25th June 2010 at 2pm, then please come to the Cleaning Up Communications event which will be taking at Tempero’s luxurious W1 apartments. We have every confidence that it will be the virtual sponge of absolution you’ve all been hankering for in order to clean up your act and achieve the impossible by regaining your virginal reputations. There will be a number of diverse contributors – including our very own Darika Ahrens – and the chance to discuss and debate some of the most effective ways to achieve best practice and restore the collective reputation of our PR friends.

Follow the hashtag #thupr

Free eBook helping you to understand which UK laws relate to social media and user-generated content (UGC).

Last night we launched our new eBook ‘”UGC and the law”.

Research we conducted with over 200 senior level executives found that brands may be falling foul of laws online with 81% rating their knowledge as only limited to non-existence when it comes to the laws regulating their social media activity.

So we decided that for the first time someone could pull together all the disparate information and guidance out there and put it into one handy reference eBook.

The eBook is available free to download from

The book was launched at a glittering event with a few beers at our Central London office. We had a fantastic range of speakers come along:

Danvers Baillieu (Winston & Strawn and Bootlaw.com)

John Robinson (NHS Choices)

Jon Bishop (Gumtree)

Molly Flatt (WOM UK)

Debbie Towersey (HR2HR Solutions)

All of the above contributed to the guide in addition to Dominic Campbell (FutureGov) and Agnes Nairn – a huge thank you to all who helped over the past few weeks.

Following on from What is Social CRM: Part I, a huge thank you to all those who joined us for our event last night. Here’s a quick summary in handy Twitter-sized chunks.

Social CRM is managing and harnessing the potential of your customers via social media

Social CRM comprises 5 key elements – Community, Social Media, Traditional CRM, Reputation & Analysis

Customer support is a primary foundation of Social CRM. Save money, sell products, learn from your customers

When comparing Social CRM campaigns study their size, type and life span. No two campaigns are the same

Research the 90/9/1 rule. It’s not perfect but useful to assess potential volumes

Look after the 1% than generate potentially 30-40% of your user generated content

Don’t get in the way of people’s need for answers. Don’t ignore or sell to them, just help

Find a genuine reason for running a Social CRM process. Even the least sexy brands can create genuine usefulness if thought through

Start small, focussing on just one area or product can help create a solid foundation to build on

The iPlatform has also uploaded the slides from their presentation on Facebook pages as Social CRM to Slideshare

Facebook Pages as Social CRM

You can't fail to miss the use of Twitter at most industry events now. Here's some nifty tools that can help out.

You can’t fail to miss the use of Twitter at most industry events now. Using Twitter around a live event offers:

An opportunity to promote the event before, during and after

Increase engagement from the audience by bringing their voice into the conversation

Collate key points and share with those who weren’t able to attend

Here’s some tools that might help you better integrate Twitter in to your event.

Hash tag

This is your starting point for tagging all conversations around an event or topic. You need something short (you don’t want to use up valuable characters just to tag tweets) and make sure people know to use it.

http://hashtag.org/

Twapper Keeper

Twitter doesn’t archive tweets for very long. If you set up this service before you start to use the hash tag it will collate and organise them for you.

http://twapperkeeper.com/

Twitterfall

Twitterfall does a number of useful things, but for events it’s a nice way to display them if you’re wanting to put something up on abig screen or even just track the conversation yourself.

http://twitterfall.com/

Tinker

From Glam Media, the embeddable widget from this service allows you to show hash tagged conversation directly on your site which is a cool idea [Haven't tried this out yet, anyone have any feedback?]

http://tinker.com/

ParaTweet

Here’s one for the mods, ParaTweet allows you to moderate hash tagged tweets before they appear. While it might seem counter to the spirit of Twitter you may want to protect your event from being embarassingly hijacked or if you’re discussing a sensitive topic – especially if you have a big screen displaying everything tagged.

After almost 10 years managing online communities we reckon brand use of Social Media channels comes down to one thing - it's not digital marketing, online PR, market research, SEO or even cost cutting - it's about customer relations.

Is it jargon? Does Social CRM just take the term CRM (that’s Customer Relationship Management to the layman) and tack on the word “Social” to imply all things webby? Er, well we obviously don’t think so, as we’re running an event on Social CRM in a few weeks time.

After almost 10 years managing online communities we reckon brand use of Social Media channels comes down to one thing – it’s not digital marketing, online PR, market research, SEO or even cost cutting – it’s about customer relations.

If you buy in to the warm fuzzy values around Social Media, that it’s dialogue vs broadcast, it’s 1-2-1 communications with real consumers, its humanises a brand, etc etc then surely that’s just a more social relationship with your customers? [BTW If you don't buy in to those values then you're probably really cynical or just doing it wrong].

So, the relationship with the customer is the starting point and we believe that if this is managed well in a Social Media environment then all areas of business can benefit from it; PR, Marketing, eCommerce, R&D, Customer Service, Finance, HR, Sales.

We’d like to invite you to come and learn more about the concept and see some solutions to manage customers online which have worked for brands like BT, Virgin Media, Sony Playstation, Barnes&Noble, ITV and Ministry of Sound – to be really clear this conversation is not about online customers in the eCommerce and Google AdWords sense, this is about real customer relations through a variety of online social channels.

Case studies on some of the above will be presented by our co-host Lithium Technologies and long-time Tempero faves The iPlatform.

There’s only a week left until London Digital Week kicks off. The inaugral event aims to become an annual roundup of “conferences, workshops, meet-ups, presentations, networking, parties and exhibitions bringing together the digital-orientated industries in and around London under one umbrella…”

My event addiction will be tested as I guess I have to just pick a few sessions rather than switch on my Out of Office for the entire week. Here’s my shortlist so far.

2Screen:

With the amusing tagline ‘Can TV and the Web make a baby?” this evening has been set up by Mint Digital. I think the TV industry – product, broadcast, and viewing – is one of the most exciting emerging areas for social technologies right now so really looking forward to the line up and hearing conversations beyond red-button services.

http://2-screen.com/

SheSays:

It’s hard to mention that I personally find it important to meet and support women in the digital industry without fear I’ll kick off the usual sniping that goes on when you talk about women & tech. However, this event looks like a good vibe and I spotted Kat Fraser is speaking – I’m keen to hear about her new venture The Talent Business.

http://www.shesays.org.uk/missing-out.aspx

Fast Track Digital Marketing Training:

I am an unabashed uber-fan of Econsultancy and always wanted to check out their training sessions. Hopefully by now I have a few ideas of my own on putting together “dream online strategy” but it’s always great to hear other ideas and approaches. Thankfully they’ve sold out as I don’t think I could drop that kind of money just to be nosey.

http://econsultancy.com/training/courses/fast-track-digital-marketing/dates/386

Giving Something Back:

Trend agencies and briefings may sound like a load of fluff to some but I love them and have never been disappointed when hearing Contagious speak. I don’t quite understand what they plan to talk about but I know it will be good.

http://contagiouspresentation.eventbrite.com/

What else have I missed?
