Football-Related Hate Crime Across Social Media Is Even Worse Than You Think

It’s a well known fact that hate crime in football is rife, but what most people don’t realise is just how serious the situation is, particularly across social media. For example, in the current season so far, an estimated 135,000 discriminatory posts targeting players or clubs in the Premier League were posted across social media. That’s 1 post every 2.6 minutes. Some of those players, such as Mario Balotelli, have received thousands of abusive posts directly to their personal Twitter accounts.

Mick Conroy, our Head of Insight and Innovation and Vincenzo Lauro, Senior Analyst  carried out extensive analysis of football-related hate-crime across social media in conjunction with Brandwatch on behalf of Kick It Out, a small charity that fights for equality and inclusion in football. The findings were unveiled at a private event last night in front of an audience of journalists and football organisations.
